// Key takeaways
- Basler’s documentation covers cameras, lenses, lighting, frame grabbers and pylon software; HIKROBOT adds smart cameras and code readers to its camera range.
- pylon is more than a driver: its Workbench includes vTools, most of which need a licence after the demo or evaluation period.
- HIKROBOT states GigE Vision and GenICam compatibility, and Basler’s pylon documents GigE Vision drivers and a GenICam API; that eases integration but does not make cameras interchangeable.
- Bandwidth decides the interface: a 5 MP camera at about 24 fps already fills Gigabit Ethernet.
- Compare lifecycle scope: licences, dongles, backups, firmware and who supports the application.
How do the camera ranges compare?
Basler’s product documentation lists area-scan families such as ace 2, ace, boost, dart and pulse, the racer 2 line-scan family and blaze 3D cameras, with interfaces from USB 3.0 and GigE to 10GigE and CoaXPress (Basler product documentation). HIKROBOT’s product navigation lists area-scan families (CS, CE, CA, CH, CU, CB board-level, CT, CI infrared and others), CL line-scan cameras, smart cameras, code readers, 3D laser profilers and vision controllers (HIKROBOT product families). Two example datasheets: HIKROBOT lists the MV-CS050-10GC as a 5 MP GigE Vision camera at 24.2 fps with IP40 (HIKROBOT MV-CS050-10GC), and a CT-series PRO model as IP67 with the lens and cap fitted (HIKROBOT CT series).

Which software layer are you buying?
| Layer | HIKROBOT route | Basler route | Question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Camera acquisition | MVS client and SDK for area-scan, line-scan and board-level cameras | pylon Software Suite: pylon Viewer, SDKs and drivers | Does the required camera, operating system and interface work together? |
| Inspection logic | VisionMaster (graphical, SDK and operator-design modes; deep-learning modules) or another specified application | pylon vTools in the Workbench, or another specified application | Which algorithms, runtime and licence are included? |
| Licensing | Specify the VisionMaster licence and modules in the offer | Some vTools are free; most need a licence. Demo (80 days) and evaluation (180 days) licences, then a runtime licence, on a CodeMeter dongle or as software | What happens when a dongle is lost or a PC is replaced? |
| Production application | Engineered recipe, results and PLC handling | Engineered recipe, results and PLC handling | Who owns implementation, validation, backups and support? |
Basler’s documentation describes the pylon suite with the pylon Viewer, SDKs, drivers and the Workbench with vTools (Basler pylon), and states that the Workbench includes some free vTools but most require a licence; demo licences run for 80 days and evaluation licences for 180 days before a runtime licence is needed (Basler vTool licensing). HIKROBOT separates the MVS camera client and SDK from VisionMaster, which offers graphical, SDK and operator-design development and deep-learning modules (HIKROBOT download centre)(HIKROBOT VisionMaster).
Worked example: which interface does the camera need?
The image data rate is the pixel count times the frame rate times the bits per pixel. The table shows why interface choice follows from resolution and speed. These are arithmetic examples; protocol overhead, colour formats and the exact model change the figures.
| Camera (example) | Frame rate | Data at 8 bits per pixel | Fits on |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 MP | about 24 fps | about 970 Mbit/s | GigE, just: matches the 24.2 fps HIKROBOT lists for its 5 MP GigE MV-CS050 |
| 5 MP | 60 fps | about 2,400 Mbit/s | 5GigE, 10GigE, USB 3 or CoaXPress |
| 12 MP | 30 fps | about 2,900 Mbit/s | 5GigE, 10GigE or CoaXPress |
| 25 MP | 20 fps | about 4,000 Mbit/s | 10GigE or CoaXPress |
The first row is a useful sanity check: 2,448 × 2,048 pixels at 24.2 fps and 8 bits is about 970 Mbit/s, which is why a 5 MP GigE camera such as HIKROBOT’s MV-CS050 tops out near that frame rate. Basler’s 5GigE, 10GigE and CoaXPress models, and HIKROBOT’s higher-bandwidth families, exist for the rows below it.
What matters more than megapixels?
- Sensor size and pixel size together with the required field of view and smallest visible feature.
- Lens compatibility, distortion, working distance and depth of field.
- Shutter and exposure behaviour for moving products: global shutter for most moving parts.
- Lighting geometry and stability on the actual surface.
- Trigger timing, bandwidth, cable routing, PC resources and dropped-frame handling.
See camera and lens selection for the field-of-view and resolution arithmetic.
Does a shared interface make cameras interchangeable?
HIKROBOT states that its GigE area-scan and line-scan cameras are compatible with GigE Vision and GenICam and can be driven by third-party GigE Vision software (HIKROBOT GigE camera datasheet). GenICam, hosted by EMVA, aims to give a generic programming interface for cameras whatever the interface technology (EMVA, GenICam). That helps integration, but it does not make two cameras interchangeable. Validate the required feature nodes, pixel formats, trigger modes, timestamps and recovery after a disconnect. Keep the exact camera firmware, SDK and operating-system combination in the acceptance record. A compatible image stream does not transfer an existing inspection recipe automatically.
What runs the software: PC, vision controller or smart camera?
With Basler cameras the inspection software runs on a PC or embedded computer that you or your integrator specify. HIKROBOT offers the same route, plus two others: its own vision controllers, and smart cameras that run VisionMaster tools inside the camera. HIKROBOT’s VC3000-series controllers, for example, are industrial PCs for multi-camera stations with six GigE ports and opto-isolated digital I/O, eight inputs and sixteen outputs (HIKROBOT VC3000 datasheet).
| Option | Suits | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Office-grade PC | Development and lab tests | Not built for panel heat, dust or 24/7 duty |
| Industrial PC or vision controller | Multi-camera stations, line scan, heavy processing | GigE ports and PoE, I/O count, cooling, Windows updates |
| Smart camera | One view, several checks, no separate PC | Processing headroom; which tools are licensed on that model |
| Embedded board with a board-level camera | Machine builders integrating vision into equipment | Long-term software maintenance by the builder |
The choice changes the lifecycle more than the camera does: an industrial PC needs operating-system and licence management, a smart camera needs firmware and recipe backups. Put both in the handover scope.
What does the lifecycle cost depend on?
| Item | Why it matters | Ask for |
|---|---|---|
| Software licences | Runtime licences per PC; some tools licensed separately | An itemised licence list with renewal terms |
| Dongles and activation | A lost dongle or replaced PC can stop the station | The recovery procedure and who holds spare licences |
| Firmware and SDK versions | Updates can change behaviour | The exact versions in the acceptance record |
| Spares | Cameras, lenses and lights fail or get damaged | A spares list with lead times and the local holder |
| Application support | Recipes change with products | A named support party and response terms |
We did not find published, verifiable information on either vendor’s South African service channels, so ask each supplier to name who repairs, who holds spares and the response terms, in writing.
When does a HIKROBOT-based station fit?
A new camera-plus-VisionMaster station can fit when we are responsible for imaging, inspection logic and controls integration and the samples validate that approach; a HIKROBOT smart camera or code reader can fit when one device covers the task. A plant or machine builder already maintaining a Basler application may place value on its existing software and support arrangements. Compare that lifecycle effort as well as acquisition cost; this guide contains no matched benchmark. addaScan is an independent integrator, not an official distributor of either brand.
