Circular valve-seat weld profile inspection
Circular weld inspection should separate local weld geometry from overall runout of the rotating part. Separate periodic motion from a local defect.

Machine vision can inspect accessible dimensions, visible machined features, edge defects and part identity between machining and assembly or packing. The right station starts from the drawing and the failure that needs preventing, then establishes lighting, location, a quality decision and a physical hold or reject. Machining shops and component suppliers need separate methods for characteristics the camera cannot establish, including hidden geometry, material properties and some functional fit requirements.
For a South African machining business, an inspection project may begin with repeated rework, a customer escape, a new part family or a slow manual check. Those triggers do not specify the camera. Map the routing sheet from turning and milling through drilling, deburring, washing, assembly and packing. Identify when the defect becomes visible and where the next operation will hide it. Do not put a check after the point where rejected material can no longer be separated.
| Operation | Useful camera task | Condition to establish |
|---|---|---|
| Turning/milling | Accessible outlines, slots and visible dimensions | Drawing datum, fixture, optics and reference measurement |
| Drilling/chamfering | Presence and location of visible completed features | Variant-specific feature list and optical access |
| Deburring/cleaning | Visible edge residue, scratches and contamination effects | Acceptable edge definition and production surface condition |
| Assembly | Required components present and correctly oriented | Visible features and quality-release handshake |
| Marking/packing | Part mark or visible variant matched to the order | Trusted expected identity and physical quarantine |
A single-file fastener station and a fixtured housing measurement station may use similar imaging principles but have different handling and acceptance problems. Select the relevant scope below rather than multiplying pages for every near-synonym of inspection. None of these scopes is presented as an anonymous completed customer case.
Compare the inspection scope and HIKROBOT configuration. Where a sourced budget is available it is shown in rand excluding VAT; other scopes are quoted after sample assessment.
| Line solution | Faults it catches | HIKROBOT configuration | Indicative budget (excl. VAT) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Machined part dimensional inspection | The bolt holes do not line up at assembly; Slot width varies between batches | HIKROBOT area-scan cameras with task-specific lighting and PLC quality release | Quotation after sample assessment |
| Machined hole and feature inspection | One hole is missing after drilling; A chamfer operation was skipped | HIKROBOT smart camera or area-scan camera with task-specific lighting and PLC quality release | Quotation after sample assessment |
| Machined part burr inspection | A burr remains on an outside edge; A hole mouth has residual material | HIKROBOT area-scan camera with suitable optics with task-specific lighting and PLC quality release | Quotation after sample assessment |
| Machined part mix-up inspection | Left and right parts are mixed; Similar housings share the same outline | HIKROBOT smart camera or area-scan system with task-specific lighting and PLC quality release | Quotation after sample assessment |
| Assembly verification | Missing screws and clips, O-rings, wrong variant, connector not latched | SC vision sensor, or smart cameras + ID5000 with PLC interlock | R 100 000 – R 960 000 |
| Fastener inspection | Wrong length or diameter, thread missing, mixed parts, profile burrs | Telecentric camera + backlight, VisionMaster, air-jet reject | R 270 000 – R 930 000 |
The same inspection applications appear across these lines; each links to the page that explains it in depth.
| Check | Application | What it catches | Where it stops |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dimensions | Dimensional measurement | Visible edges, centres and relationships | Hidden geometry or an unvalidated uncertainty claim |
| Operations | Presence and counting | Missing visible features or components | Complete internal thread or depth verification |
| Surface | Surface inspection | Visible damage or edge defects | Roughness, hardness and hidden cracks |
| Identity | DPM reading | A readable mark compared with expected data | Alloy or heat treatment inferred from appearance |
The rules require the outcome; a camera is one way to check it on every unit.
Provide the drawing revision, characteristic list, representative good and faulty parts, reference measurements and production surface condition. Specify the quality decision separately from machine safety: a PLC quality hold is not a certified safety function. Customer drawings and samples remain project inputs, not public website evidence.
For a measurement task, agree how bias, repeatability, reproducibility and stability will be evaluated. For a defect or identity task, define defect classes, allowed presentation, unknown variants and the handling of uncertain images. Include the physical outcome in acceptance: the right component must be held, quarantined or routed to rework, and a stale pass must not release the next component.
The proposal should state views, optics, fixtures, handling, software/licensing, PLC responsibilities, commissioning and validation. Some established line-solution scopes have dated reference budgets; new machining scopes are quoted after optical and integration assessment. A camera price alone is not the price of the complete station.
